Please welcome Karen N., readers! She has two young daughters, whom she recently took to Sesame Place. Karen tried a product new to the ChapmanHill BABY product line-up, so we asked her to let us know how it worked.  Read on to see what she thinks of the Episencial Babytime! Sunny Sunscreen and how it worked on her newest teeny one.

EPIS.4302-2

Ah, summer.  A time to relax and have fun in the sun.  Grab a swim suit, a towel, the sunscreen – Wait!  What?!  Not for use on infants 6 months and under?!  How do I keep my newborn from frying like a potato chip in the midday July sun?  I posed this question to Cheri [owner of CHB] during a visit to ChapmanHill BABY a few days before our family trip to Sesame Place we were taking as a surprise for our almost-three-year-old, who has been such a great big sister.  Cheri introduced me to Episencial Sunny Sunscreen.  Unlike other sunscreens that are not for use on babies younger than six months, this is safe for newborns.  Fast forward a few days to Sesame Place.  Here goes nothing!  I opened the tube and began to apply.  The first thing I noticed is that it is thick.  The second thing I noticed is that a little bit goes a long way.  This second point keyed me into the fact that even though this is pricier than other children’s sunscreens (the ones that I can’t use on my baby anyway), it is actually a better value since you use less.  The third thing I noticed is that despite daily moisturizing, my little girl had some dry skin on her face that I was unable to see until the sunscreen settled into it.  Note to self: use moisturizer on her an extra time each day.  The real test still remained: How would the Sunny Sunscreen protect her on this particularly bright day?  At the end of the day, the results were in.  It did not look like she had gotten a single ray, despite being outside for about 80% of the day.  She didn’t even have a slight tan, which was surprising because my older daughter tans really quickly, even with globs of sunscreen.  (I should mention I have never used the Sunny Sunscreen on her, so I can’t say whether or not the results would be the same for her with this product.)  But my baby’s delicate skin was protected from the sun perfectly.  Also noteworthy, she has pretty sensitive skin and the sunscreen did not bother it at all.

Conclusion:  This is a great product.  I have already purchased a second tube to keep on hand.  I highly recommend it for any baby, particularly for those under six months who are not old enough for other sunscreens.

Thanks, Karen!  For other sunscreen reviews by CHB, please see our previous post on BALM! Baby sunscreen.  These are some AWESOME products that we carry in-store. Even though summer may be (way too quickly) coming to an end, sunscreen application is important anytime that exposure to the sun is expected.  Don’t forget that in the wintertime, UV rays can be just as intense and the reflection of sun off the white snow can certainly be problematic.  The three best ways to protect your kids’s skin is to apply sunscreen, cover up skin or seek shade, and to set a good example by applying sunscreen to yourself too.
